Pellet Cooler-What DIY Pellet Makers Forget

When it comes to pellet making, the most crucial stage is the cooling of the pellets. Most people looking to make their own pellets think that the whole is as easy as feeding wood shavings into a pellet mill to get pellets( For more details check here .) . Well, the process is a bit more complicated. There is the cooling part, which is the break or makes part of the whole process. It is this final juncture that will determine if you will get to use the pellets or you should seek out some other means of keeping your home warm. Actually for a lot of first time pellet makers, this is the part where frustration and disappointment first rear their ugly heads. The pellets come out of the pellet mill perfectly formed but upon storage they crumble and most people do not understand why. Experts have pinpointed this problem to the high temperature in the freshly manufactured pellets. Therefore a pellet cooler is necessary so that the integrity of pellets can be preserved.

Pellets fresh out of a pellet mill have a heat measurement of around 25 degrees Celsius and when they are piled one on top of the other, this heat can increase 10 fold. Consider the case of a compost heap. In the center of the whole heap, there is enough heat to actually boil a kettle of water. This is the same case when it comes to pellets and with such heat, the likelihood of crumbling is all but certain. Coolers are therefore employed to help pellets discharge this heat in a manner that their structural integrity is not interfered with. The best pellet cooler to use is a counter flow cooler that cools the pellets against their flow. This makes it easier to dispense the heat as well as remove any moisture content in the pellets. When you are storing pellets, you need to make sure that they are below or at room temperature and also their moisture content should be below 10% so that they do not crumble.

Cost of Wood Pellets Will Keep Coming Down

As an alternative source of fuel, biomass is one of the favorite. Biomass is used to manufacture pellets that can be used in boilers or pellet stoves. Pellets are highly combustible organic matter, cylindrical in shape, made through a process called pelletizing. The process involves the use of pellet making machine which compresses the biomass into the cylindrical shape characterized in pellets. Pellets can be made from a variety of organic waste such as wood shavings, straws and even grass. So after mowing the lawns, you can collect that grass and use it to make yourself some pellets.

This is the first reason why the cost of wood pellets will keep coming down. The readily available material to make pellets mean that almost everybody has a source of raw materials necessary to make pellets. It’s almost like having your own private oil rig. On top of this, pellet making machines are becoming more and more available to the common home owner. Companies are making smaller and more portable pellet mills that can be operated from home. You can now collect the raw material, prepare the raw material and make your own pellets in a space of two days. This brings us to the third point that of reducing cost of wood pellets in the future. When it comes to preparing the biomass for the pelletizing process, all that you need to do is dry the biomass so that it loses up to 75% of its moisture. Natural sunlight can do this or a dryer can do the same. All these processes will consume less than a third of your utility bill which means that you will never have to spend the same amount again when it comes to heating your home.

Advantages of Small Machines for Creating Pellet

Pellet machines are really popular these days but it seems that there are some common misconceptions that appear when thinking about many aspects. We should talk about the size since there are numerous advantages of purchasing a small machine. Contrary to what you might have been told, the machines that create pellets do come in all possible sizes. Most people think that only big units exist. In fact, the advantages of using small units are quite many.

You are going to purchase smaller pellet machines when you want to use them for personal processes. In the past there were small problems but now technology has reached a degree of development that basically guarantees that the units are going to be perfect for small scale manufacturing. You will no longer need to go to big companies and in the process you are to save a lot of money.

Saving money stands out as the most important reason why you should seriously consider this option. At first you might find it that you do not save a lot but as time passes you will see that the amounts do add up. In addition, the machines are going to last for a very long time and they do not require much maintenance. Going into the pellet making business can be a very interesting move that is quite profitable.

You can expect all necessary technology to be included in the small machines. There are even units that include bactericidal effect. Some might do not have this but we need to stay away from them. The truth is that this is the only fact that you need to be careful about when making a purchase. Older machines did have problems. Just make sure that you find one that offers a high temperature of around 75 degrees so that microorganisms are going to be killed.

The Pellet Manufacturing Process

The pellet manufacturing process can be broken down into 6 stages. These stages are discussed below.

  1. The first step involves the collection of raw material and bringing it into the mill. These raw material include saw dust, wood chippings, and any other form of biomass that can be used in making pellets.
  2. Using a hammer mills, the raw material is crushed into uniform fiber sizes. This is particularly so for large pieces of wood that may need to be crushed to a more reasonable size that can be pelletized.
  3. After crushing, the resulting fibers need to be injected with moisture, which is necessary for the pelletization process. A steam machine is used in this process.
  4. The raw material is then fed into a pellet press or pellet-making machine, which compresses the fibers against a die, to form the pellets. The machine uses high pressure, heat, and friction to form the pellets.
  5. The pellets are then taken from the pellet press and chilled.
  6. The final step involves the inspection of the pellets for any loose dirt, and those that are up to the required standard are sprayed with hot air to remove dirt particles. These may then be packaged for shipping.

The History of pellets

Pellets have been around since time immemorial; by means of heat and compression, little cylindrical shaped pellets can be man-made from an assortment of provisions for diverse uses. By the year 1970, some enterprises that used pellet mills to produce animal feeds, began to look at ways of producing for their consumption wood pellets as their main source of fuel.

On the other hand, the low-priced fossil fuels that were available then; the wood pellet industry with great effort tried to grow. The use of fuel pellets and wood pellets has tremendously grown, ensuing in huge problems with supplies in the 21st century in general. Owing to the high gas and oil prices, and anxiety caused by climate change, fuel pellets are environmentally friendly, low priced heating fuels that can aid in reducing global warming.

Over the preceding decade, two factors have contributed immensely in the soaring popularity of wood pellets in the pellets market. The first factor has been the steady increase in the price of fossil energy and price volatility, while the second is the amplified concentration of the effect of fossil power like gas and oil on the atmosphere. Additional contributing reasons, which shore up the case for pellets use is that they can be made locally, from biomass materials and local woods. Pellet manufacturing and circulation can bring into being an inexpensive fuel, generating local jobs whilst restraining the carbon footprint caused by fuels to a bare minimum.

Pellet mills are suitable for condensing diverse forms of fibrous materials like maize husks, rice husks, peanut shells, cottonseed hulls, wheat bio products, corncobs, sawdust, cotton stalks, house refuse, sunflower seed shells, plastic waste materials, and other factory waste materials. Organic fertilizer, organic bacterial manure, and compound fertilizers can also be pelletized by pellet mills.

Ring Die Pellet Mill vs. Flat Die Pellet Mill

Many people enjoy pellet heating without bothering to know how these wood pellets are made. In addition, these people will just rush to their nearest convenience store and buy the wood pellet that they require for heating without knowing that the amount of money they are spending could actually be saved, if only if they invested in their own pellet mill. However, before setting out to buy a pellet mill, one must first understand how the pellet production processes work, and the kind of machines that are involved.

To begin with, you must obviously have a pellet mill that will be used to make the wood pellets. Apart from this pellet mill, you must also have a chipper or hammer mill, which comes in handy when there is need to breakdown large pieces of wood, into sizes suitable for pelletizing.

Having said these, the confusion comes in when selecting a pellet mill. There are 2 types of pellet mills; namely the Ring Die Pellet mill and the Flat Die Pellet mill. The difference is not major, and lies in the die used i.e. a plate with holes where the mill’s roller presses the raw materials to form the pellets. Therefore, you will need to know which pellet mill to buy, depending on the purpose that you intend to use it for. The differences between the 2 mills are as below.

  • The Flat Die Pellet machine has a small yield that the Ring Die Pellet, hence it is suitable for small-scale pellet production.
  • The Flat Die Pellet machine has an adjustable pressure load hence is more versatile when making different types of pellets, and especially when it comes to pressing viscous materials such as corn meal feeds.
  • The Ring Die Pellet machine is more suited for making animal feeds, due to its low power consumption compared to the large output that it produces.

Advantages of having a Small Pellet Machine

It is an acknowledged verity that the pellet machine is the best power saving device, which is fast becoming trendy as the days pass. However, with the improvement of the economy and society, several people prefer to use their machines for private use or for individual use, and that is where the wood pellet comes into being. By means of high-tech, pellet machines a person can generate fine particles without a belt drive shaft, which is more highly developed than the preceding pellet machines. The advantage of the high tech pellet machine is that it does not require a water to be added onto it when making particles. It is the dry-out machine type.

The small pellets machine is generally used for private feeding or for small-scale uses. The particles that are pelletized by machines for pelletizing can be stored for a long while, usually more than six or more months. Grass meal, and powder feeds can be pelletized directly with a little water. Thus, the humidity content of pellets is just about the same as for the supplies before pelletizing, which is suitable for storeroom purposes.

At some stage in the progression of a small pellet machines maneuvering, plays a bactericidal end product. The high temperature of 75, that small pellet machines kill microorganism bacteria’s does not affect the pelletized materials and their quality. The templates of a small pellet machine and roller pinch are delicately made of wear resistant materials and high alloys. Thus the small pellet machine is made to last longer and offers a lot of robustness, reasonable structure, and low noises, wide applicability and requires small storage space. One complete pellet machine when it is being sold contains a small pellet press, hammer mill, wood chipping machine and a packing machine.
